Day on a sightseeing boat departing from Digoin: Our itinerary suggestions

Digoin is an ideal starting point for renting your license-free boat for the day. The town of Digoin is crossed by three canals: the Canal du Centre, the Roanne to Digoin Canal, and the Canal Latéral à la Loire. Depending on your preferences and your mood of the moment, several choices are available to you.

On the Canal du Centre, you can reach the Romanesque town of Paray-le-Monial (approximately 2.5 hours of navigation). After crossing the natural landscapes of the Charolais countryside, you’ll take the time to discover this charming town, the economic capital of Charolais. Between Digoin and Paray-le-Monial, you’ll find yourself at the beginning of the Ceramic Valley. Here, you can find numerous pottery and faience workshops, as well as the Mosaic Museum, an emblem of Paray-le-Monial.

On the Roanne to Digoin Canal, nature welcomes you with open arms. Initially, you’ll pass through the charming town center of Digoin and then navigate on the famous canal bridge. As soon as you exit the first lock, you’ll notice a sudden change in scenery: nature is omnipresent and open to you. Nicknamed “the tranquil canal,” the Roanne to Digoin Canal is particularly appreciated by boaters. During your boat day, you can travel to Bonnant in the commune of Luneau. At this point, the canal is very close to the Loire River, and you can reach the banks of the Loire on foot for a refreshing walk in the heart of nature.

On the Canal Latéral à la Loire, you’ll navigate through the magnificent landscapes of Bourbonnais. After crossing the canal bridge in Digoin, you’ll follow the Loire River and pass through several communes until you reach Pierrefitte-sur-Loire. A beautiful boat trip, between bucolic landscapes, industrial tourism, and the discovery of rural communes in Allier.
